Redefining Holiday Traditions

The holidays will be anything but typical this year. What’s ordinarily a time for hustle and togetherness has been challenged with new stay-safe and socially distanced norms due to the pandemic. But just because the season is different doesn’t mean it can’t still be celebrated.

There is, after all, a bright side: Fewer activities and obligations mean more time to spend with your family or quaranteam. Create new memories together by trying some of these alternative ideas.

  • Not attending a holiday show? Curl up on the couch for a showing of It’s a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, or your other favorite seasonal film complete with movie night treats. You could also read or listen to audiobooks of your favorite stories or look to see if any local theaters are offering virtual presentations.
  • Not gathering with as many family members or friends? You can still show them you’re thinking of them: Send holiday cards and take time to write everyone messages, drop off a homemade gift or seasonal goodie, or arrange a video chat get-together.
  • Not going out gift shopping? Shop online. You can avoid the stress of the crowds and save yourself time as you search for the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Plus, it’s easier to scan for the best deals online versus in person. You could also consider filling your at-home time by making homemade gifts.
  • Not taking part in a Turkey Trot race? Look for a virtual Turkey Trot event to still run or walk, or do a 5K on your own or with your family.
  • Not going caroling? Pick your favorite carol and perform it virtually for your loved ones. Bonus: No driving or walking in the cold required!
  • Not cooking a big dinner? Options still abound! Enjoying a meal with a smaller group means more time for conversation (and fewer dishes). You could also prepare your favorite holiday recipes or treats to drop off for friends, family, or neighbors, or arrange a virtual dinner or cocktail hour.
